Assignment 3: Critical Reflection

Module Learning: Prior to the start of this module, my goals for this class was to improve my communication skills, particularly in report writing. My time in National Service, though fruitful had given me the opportunity to interact with individuals from all walks of life. This transformed the way that I communicated with others, but it also dwindled my ability to communicate professionally. Looking back over the past 13 weeks, I believed that I have gained more than I expected. The materials covered in class was extensive, and though I often struggled with them, realizing how essential these skills are in the future helped me to stay focused in my learning. The concepts taught in class such as the Paul-Elder Framework and Dewey's model of Reflection have been instrumental in helping me to conceptualize my ideas and put them into paper. In doing so, I was able to refine my thought process from ideation to planning and creation. One thing that I truly appreciated was how we were e...

Technical Report Draft #1 (XYZ Atom VR Headset)

Introduction Augmented Reality (AR) technology is still in its early stages but is becoming increasingly common as advancements continue. However, integrating AR like the XYZ Atom AR Headset into the workplace presents challenges, one of which is cybersickness. This form of motion sickness is caused by prolonged use of AR headsets. Unlike traditional motion sickness, cybersickness can occur even when the user is stationary and varies in severity based on individual tolerance. This report responds to a call for a design proposal aimed at improving AR technology. It focuses on mitigating cybersickness to support broader workplace integration.

Individual Research Contributions to Group Project (Atom XYZ Headset)

Updated on 28/02/2025: Wrote the team minutes on Google Docs.  Researched on the Atom XYZ headset via ChatGPT and Google. Tried to find if there was any consumer reviews online so that we can identify a potential problem but to no avail. I then realised that one problem that users might experience is motion sickness due to the change in the depth of field from the VR headsets. I then used ChatGPT to find academic literature to support my hypothesis.  Once it was verified, I proposed it to the group a potential problem statement. I then wrote the ideal and goal, problem statement and report title and finalized it with the team. Created our approach to writing the Technical Report with the team. Created a google doc so that everyone can collaborate on it. Updated on 07/03/2025: Found out that the company which made the MotionCure, our solution, had went out of business. After discussing with the team and presenting an alternative, we found a resolution and proceeded with the rep...

Reader Response Analysis Draft #4

The Apple Vision Pro is a powerful mixed-reality headset that combines Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Launched in 2023, it marks Apple’s entry into the spatial computing market (Apple, 2023). Featuring M2 and R1 chips, the device delivers a high-performance, low-latency experience. Its Micro-OLED display boasts 23 million pixels, HDR support, and an advanced spatial audio system, providing an immersive user experience. It also integrates with the Apple ecosystem, porting Mac, iPad, and iOS apps into a virtual 3D workspace. Operating on visionOS, it enables users to interact with digital content as if it were physically present (Apple, 2023). This makes apps like Safari, Zoom and other business tools more accessible, enhancing productivity and collaboration.     Though spatial computing is still in its infancy, the Apple Vision Pro showcases its potential. Xu et al. (2024) highlight how AR devices like the Vision Pro enhance design visualization, construc...

Summary + Thesis + Support Draft #2

Thesis Statement (My assertion): The Apple Vision Pro showcases the vast potential of mixed reality across work, entertainment and training. However, while it has applications in the engineering industry, its design and hardware limitations make it less suitable compared to AR headsets specifically developed for engineering workflows. Primary Support #1:  The Apple Vision Pro's size and weight makes it unsuitable for fieldwork. This makes it uncomfortable for extended field use in construction environments where comfort is crucial. Primary Support #2:  The Apple Vision Pro relies on intuitive hand gesture controls which can be dangerous in hazardous field environments like construction sites. Primary Support #3: Due to its consumer-centric design, the Apple Vision Pro has hardware limitations for civil engineering. It lacks support for engineering software like AutoCAD and Revit, preventing it from overlaying 3D designs to scale on physical construction sites.  Cou...

Research Pathway (Apple Vision Pro)

Why did I choose the Apple Vision Pro I chose the Apple Vision Pro because it is a cutting-edge technology with immense potential. This innovative device uses mixed-reality (MR) technology, seamlessly blending Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to create a highly versatile virtual workspace. By integrating the capabilities of a full workstation into one device, the Apple Vision Pro enables professionals to work from virtually anywhere, eliminating the need for traditional physical setups. The technology is particularly exciting for the civil engineering industry, as it enhances the ability to visualize 3D models of buildings and floorplans in real-world environments. This immersive visualization fosters better collaboration among stakeholders and facilitates more efficient problem-solving, ultimately transforming how projects are designed, managed, and executed. Research Pathway The Apple Vision Pro, a cutting-edge mixed reality headset, offers transformative potenti...
